A Post Election Biblical Perspective: Barabbas

Pericope: Matt 27:15-21 15 Now it was the governor’s custom at
the festival to release a prisoner chosen by the crowd. 16 At that
time they had a well-known prisoner whose name was Jesus
Barabbas. 17 So when the crowd had gathered, Pilate asked
them, “Which one do you want me to release to you: Jesus
Barabbas, or Jesus who is called the Messiah?” 18 For he knew
it was out of self-interest that they had handed Jesus over to him.
19 While Pilate was sitting on the judge’s seat, his wife sent him
this message: “Don’t have anything to do with that innocent man,
for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream because of him.”
20 But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd
to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus executed.
21 “Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” asked
the governor. “Barabbas,” they answered.
Sermon Text: Matthew 27:21 Which of the two do you want me
to release to you?” asked the governor.
“Barabbas,” they answered.
Sermon Title: A Post Election Biblical Perspective: Barabbas
Point 1: The Record – Mark 15: 7 A man called Barabbas was in

Point 2: The Reflection of Truth—Barabbas 1 Cor 13: 12 For we
see in a mirror dimly… Proverbs 14: 12 There is a way which
seem right unto a man…
Leviticus 19: 33-34 When a foreigner resides among you in your
land, do not mistreat them. The foreigner residing among you
must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for
you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the Lord your God
Point 3: The Religious Right – Mark 15: 11 But the chief priests
stirred up the crowd to have Pilate release Barabbas instead.
Point 4: The Rule of Law – Matt 27: 15 Now it was the governor’s
custom at the festival to release a prisoner chosen by the crowd.
Point 5: The working of God’s will - Romans 12: 2 Do not
conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the
renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve
what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
a) God will had to work through Abraham – Gen 22: 12 “Do
not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to
him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not
withheld from me your son, your only son.”
b) God’s will had to work through a flood – Gen 6:9-11 - 9 This
is the account of Noah and his family. Noah was a righteous
man, blameless among the people of his time, and he
walked faithfully with God. 10 Noah had three sons: Shem,
Ham and Japheth.11 Now the earth was corrupt in God’s
sight and was full of violence.
c) Gods will had to work through 400 years then another 40
years Ex. 12: 40 Now the length of time the Israelite people
lived in Egypt[a] was 430 years.
d) God’s will had to work though 42 generations – Matt 1: 17
Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to
David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and
fourteen from the exile to the Messiah.
What did they do, what should we do?
1. Don’t lose your hope nor your way
2. Don’t sulk while you sit in this reality
3. Don’t disengage
4. Continue to trust God
5. Have faith not fear
