Do You Know How to Show Up?

Luke 22:7-19

Key Verses: 15-19

Passover, or the ______________________________ is one of the appointed times God gave to Israel when He was establishing His law with them (Exodus 12, Leviticus 23, Duet. 16:1-8).

Its purpose is for them to remember the night the angel of death passed over them as God carried out his final sign to the Egyptians, the killing of their first born.

This was the final plague before they were liberated. The Passover reminds them of their deliverance, it’s a moment for them to thank God for it.

  • Seder plate
    - bitter herbs, shank bone, egg, charoset.
  • Wine - Represents the four expressions of redemption mentioned in the Torah (Exodus 6:6-7): "I will bring you out," "I will deliver you," "I will redeem you," and "I will take you to me as a people."
  • Matzo (unleavened bread) - Represents how quickly they had to leave Egypt with no time for the bread to rise.
  • Cup for Elijah - Jews believe he will herald the coming of the messiah.
  • Haggadah - Songs, parts of the Exodus story, blessings, and explanations of the symbolic foods.

In Jesus’ time there would have been some of the same elements, but most significantly, they would have had the Paschal Lamb.

Overall, what you need to remember about this meal is that it is a meal of ________________. It is quite literally a ___________________.

Point 1: Jesus shows up in _________________  - When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table, And he said to them, I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God.”

  • Jesus comes to this meal for the last time before His suffering.
  • By the time He comes to this meal with His disciples, the Passover has been practiced anywhere from 1,300 to 1,400 times.
  • His obedience is passionate.
  • We MUST be like Jesus. We must show up in obedience and do so with passion.

Point 2: Jesus shows up an has a custom of ___________________ - After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, “Take this and divide it among you. For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” And he took bread, gave thanks…

  • Jesus would have given thanks the way He did for many different things throughout the day.
  • He would have said some version of what is called the HaMotzi Lechem Min Haaret or the HaMotzi. A prayer of gratitude for the most basic of provisions, bread.
  • Blessed are you oh Lord our God, ___________________________, who gives bread from the earth.
  • Now, are we supposed to adopt all the customs we see done in Scripture, no. But what can we see from this? That Jesus has a custom of _________________.

Point 3: Jesus Participates in Gratitude with His ______________________ -  and broke it, and gave it to them

  • By nature, the Passover meal is done with a community. The elements of the meal are shared amongst the table as we see here “and gave it to them”.
  • We need our community to help us show up.
  • Our community reminds us, through encouragement, testimony, and presence that our God is loving and kind. They help us show up.

Point 4: Jesus thanks God for both ________________ and ________________   - …saying “This is my body  given for you; do this in remembrance of me.”

  • Jesus gave thanks over the bread as was his custom.
  • But THIS TIME it means something different.
  • He is both thanking God and acknowledging the brokenness ahead. He holds both things together.
  • He fully embodies 1 Thessalonians 5:18 and we can as well because we have the perfect example.

Life Application:

  • Ask God where He’s inviting you to show up.
  • Create or refine your customs of Gratitude. Practice a new custom this week.
