The Future is Secure
Scripture: 1 Corinthians 1:20
Even though past, present, and especially the future seem uncertain and shaky to say the least, I want to encourage you with the following verse. 2 Corinthians 1:20 -
For no matter how many promises God has made, they are yes in Christ and so through Him the amen is spoken by us to the glory of God.
• Let’s look quickly at the context of this passage. Paul is writing to believers of Jesus in the Corinthian church.
• This is his 2nd letter to them and what we know is that Paul had a schedule by which he was traveling to the various churches in his missionary journey.
• In 1 Corinthians, he had a specific itinerary that involved visiting Ephesus, Corinth, and Macedonia in a certain order.
• His plans changed and those that were against Paul used those changes as fuel to inject an accusation on Him that he was fickle.
• That his changing of plans made him like one who is of the world.
• Paul, who deeply cares about how he represents Christ, is so distressed by this charge that He feels He must correct it and does so by declaring that someone who is so committed to the faithful message of the Gospel could not be wavering because the words of God are not wavering.
1 - No matter how many promises God has made
• I will not leave you - Joshua 1:5
• I will bless you - Genesis 12:2
• I will give you peace and rest - Matthew 11:28
• I will provide- Matthew 6:33
• I will give you a future and hope - Jeremiah 29:11
• I will make all things new - Revelation 21:5
2 - They are “Yes” in Christ
This means the very existence of Jesus,
• who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death-even death on a cross. Therefore God exalted him to the highest place And gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus’s every knee should bow, in heaven and on either and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father.
• Because of Jesus, who is himself, a fulfillment of God’s promises, everything God has promised has been fulfilled and is yet being fulfilled in Him.
3 - The amen is spoken through us
