Power Plug: Level Up Your Power Supply
Pericope: Acts 1:1-9 1 In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote
about all that Jesus began to do and to teach 2 until the day he
was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy
Spirit to the apostles he had chosen. 3 After his suffering, he
presented himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that
he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and
spoke about the kingdom of God. 4 On one occasion, while he was
eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave
Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you
have heard me speak about. 5 For John baptized with [a] water, but
in a few days you will be baptized with [b] the Holy Spirit.” 6 Then
they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this
time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7 He said to them: “It
is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his
own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit
comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in
all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” 9 After he
said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid
him from their sight.
Sermon Text: Acts 1: 8 But you will receive power when the Holy
Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem,

Galatians 5:16, 17,22 16 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will
not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the flesh desires what is
contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the
flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to
do whatever [a] you want. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy,
peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
Romans 8:29 29 For those God foreknew he also predestined to be
conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the
firstborn among many brothers and sisters.
Holy Spirit in your life:
1. Acts 2:4 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and
began to speak in other tongues [a] as the Spirit enabled
them.
2. Acts 10:44-46 44 While Peter was still speaking these words,
the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message. 45 The
circumcised believers who had come with Peter were
astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured
out even on Gentiles. 46 For they heard them speaking in
tongues [a] and praising God.
3. Acts 19:6 6 When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy
Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues [a] and
prophesied.
People baptized in tongues:
1. Acts 8:14-17 14 When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that
Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and
John to Samaria. 15 When they arrived, they prayed for the
new believers there that they might receive the Holy
Spirit, 16 because the Holy Spirit had not yet come on any of
them; they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord
Jesus. 17 Then Peter and John placed their hands on
them, and they received the Holy Spirit.
2. Acts 9:17-18 17 Then Ananias went to the house and entered
it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, “Brother Saul, the
Lord—Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were
coming here—has sent me so that you may see again and
be filled with the Holy Spirit.” 18 Immediately, something like
scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he could see again. He got
up and was baptized,
Point 3: Power Plugged Up
1. Anger: James 1:19-20 19 My dear brothers and sisters, take
note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to
speak and slow to become angry, 20 because human
anger does not produce the righteousness that God
desires.
2. Disappointment: Joshua 1:9 9 Have I not commanded you?
Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be
discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you
wherever you go.”
3. Sin: John 5:14 14 Later Jesus found him at the temple and
said to him, “See, you are well again. Stop sinning or
something worse may happen to you.”
1 Corinthians 15:34 34 Come back to your senses as you
ought, and stop sinning; for there are some who are
ignorant of God—I say this to your shame.
4. Poor circulation: Act 10:4 4 Cornelius stared at him in fear.
“What is it, Lord?” he asked. The angel answered, “Your
prayers and gifts to the poor have come up as a memorial
offering before God.
2 Corinthians 9:10 10 Now he who supplies seed to the
sower and bread for food will also supply and increase
your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your
righteousness.
Point 4: Stay Plugged In
Acts 1:13-14 13 When they arrived, they went upstairs to the
room where they were staying. Those present were Peter, John,
James and Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and
Matthew; James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and
Judas son of James. 14 They all joined together constantly in
prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and
with his brothers.
Stay plugged into Community, Acts 2:42-46 42 They devoted
themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the
breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe at
the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. 44 All the
believers were together and had everything in common. 45 They
sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had
need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple
courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with
glad and sincere hearts,
