Bible Study – Walk Through the Bible

2nd Samuel

David’s Story Continues

Introduction: 1 st and 2 nd Samuel is consumed with the reign of

David.

Point 1: The Triumphs 2 Sam 5: 1-5 All the tribes of Israel came

to David at Hebron and said, “We are your own flesh and blood. 2

In the past, while Saul was king over us, you were the one who

led Israel on their military campaigns. And the Lord said to you,

‘You will shepherd my people Israel, and you will become their

ruler.’”

3 When all the elders of Israel had come to King David at Hebron,

the king made a covenant with them at Hebron before the Lord,

and they anointed David king over Israel.

4 David was thirty years old when he became king, and he

reigned forty years. 5 In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven

years and six months, and in Jerusalem he reigned over all Israel

and Judah thirty-three years.

Isaiah 11: 1 A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from

his roots a Branch will bear fruit.

Jeremiah 23: 5 “The days are coming,” declares the LORD, “when

I will raise up for David[a] a righteous Branch, a King who will

reign wisely and do what is just and right in the land.

Ez. 37: 25 They will live in the land I gave to my servant Jacob,

the land where your ancestors lived. They and their children and

their children’s children will live there forever, and David my

servant will be their prince forever.

2 Sam 7:11, 1311 and have done ever since the time I appointed

leaders[a] over my people Israel. I will also give you rest from all

your enemies. “‘The LORD declares to you that the LORD himself

will establish a house for you: 13 He is the one who will build a

house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom

forever.

Point 2: The Temptation: 2 Sam. 11:3-4; 15-17 - 3 and David sent

someone to find out about her. The man said, “She is Bathsheba,

the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite.” 4 Then

David sent messengers to get her. She came to him, and he slept

with her. (Now she was purifying herself from her monthly

uncleanness.) Then she went back home. 15 In it he wrote, “Put

Uriah out in front where the fighting is fiercest. Then withdraw

from him so he will be struck down and die.” 16 So while Joab

had the city under siege, he put Uriah at a place where he knew

the strongest defenders were. 17 When the men of the city came

out and fought against Joab, some of the men in David’s army

fell; moreover, Uriah the Hittite died.

Jesus provides a playbook to overcome temptation

a. Fight with the word - Matt 4:4, 7 - 4 Jesus answered, “It is

written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word

that comes from the mouth of God.’”7 Jesus answered him,

“It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’

b. Acknowledge you are tempted

c. Don’t debate – Matt 4:10 Jesus said to him, “Away from me,

Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and

serve him only.’[a]”

Point 3: The Troubles 2 Sam. 12:11-12; 18:14 - 11 “This is what

the LORD says: ‘Out of your own household I am going to bring

calamity on you. Before your very eyes I will take your wives and

give them to one who is close to you, and he will sleep with your

wives in broad daylight. 12 You did it in secret, but I will do this

thing in broad daylight before all Israel.’” 14 Joab said, “I’m not

going to wait like this for you.” So he took three javelins in his

hand and plunged them into Absalom’s heart while Absalom was

still alive in the oak tree.

a. Sin is slow drop of water – 2 Sam 18:33 The king was

shaken. He went up to the room over the gateway and wept.

As he went, he said: “O my son Absalom! My son, my son

Absalom! If only I had died instead of you—O Absalom, my

son, my son!

b. The death of something

c. It’s not

Point 4: The Temple 2 Sam 24:24, 25 - 24 But the king replied

to Araunah, “No, I insist on paying you for it. I will not sacrifice to

the LORD my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing.” So David

bought the threshing floor and the oxen and paid fifty shekels of

silver for them. 25 David built an altar to the LORD there and

sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings. Then the LORD

answered his prayer in behalf of the land, and the plague on

Israel was stopped.
