Lesson 8
Judges and Ruth
Leadership
Habakuk 2:2 Then the Lord replied: “Write down the revelation
and make it plain on tablets so that a herald[a] may run with it.
Proverbs 29:18 NIV 18 Where there is no revelation, people cast
off restraint; but blessed is the one who heeds wisdom’s
instruction.
Proverbs 29:18 NLT 18 When people do not accept divine
guidance, they run wild. But whoever obeys the law is joyful.
This is the basis for Judges. Judges 17:6 6 In those days Israel
had no king [leadership]; all the people did whatever seemed right
in their own eyes.
The additional basis is 2 Corinthians 6: 17, 18 17 Therefore, come
out from among unbelievers, and separate yourselves from them,
says the LORD. Don’t touch their filthy things, and I will welcome
you. 18 And I will be your Father, and you will be my sons and
daughters, says the LORD Almighty.”
Leadership Episode One
A. LEADERSHIP PROBLEM
Judges 3:5-8 5 The Israelites lived among the Canaanites,
Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites. 6 They
took their daughters in marriage and gave their own
daughters to their sons, and served their gods. 7 The
Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD; they forgot
the LORD their God and served the Baals and the
Asherahs. 8 The anger of the LORD burned against Israel so
that he sold them into the hands of Cushan-Rishathaim king
of Aram Naharaim, [a] to whom the Israelites were subject for
eight years.
B. LEADERSHIP PERSON
Judges 3:9-11 9 But when they cried out to the LORD, he
raised up for them a deliverer, Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb’s
younger brother, who saved them. 10 The Spirit of
the LORD came on him, so that he became Israel’s
judge [a] and went to war. The LORD gave Cushan-
Rishathaim king of Aram into the hands of Othniel, who
overpowered him. 11 So the land had peace for forty
years, until Othniel son of Kenaz died.
C. LEADERSHIP PLAN
Leadership Episode Two
A. LEADERSHIP PROBLEM
Judges 3:12 12 Again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of
the Lord, and because they did this evil the Lord gave Eglon
king of Moab power over Israel.
B. LEADERSHIP PERSON
Judges 3:15 15 Again the Israelites cried out to the Lord,
and he gave them a deliverer—Ehud, a left-handed man, the
son of Gera the Benjamite. The Israelites sent him with
tribute to Eglon king of Moab.
C. LEADERSHIP PLAN
Judges 3:29 29 At that time they struck down about ten
thousand Moabites, all vigorous and strong; not one
escaped.
Judges 3:31 31 After Ehud came Shamgar son of Anath, who
struck down six hundred Philistines with an oxgoad. He too
saved Israel.
Leadership Episode Three
A. LEADERSHIP PROBLEM
Judges 4:1-3 4 Again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of
the LORD, now that Ehud was dead. 2 So the LORD sold
them into the hands of Jabin king of Canaan, who reigned in
Hazor. Sisera, the commander of his army, was based in
Harosheth Haggoyim. 3 Because he had nine hundred
chariots fitted with iron and had cruelly oppressed the
Israelites for twenty years, they cried to the LORD for help.
B. LEADERSHIP PERSON
Judges 4:4-6 4 Now Deborah, a prophet, the wife of
Lappidoth, was leading [a] Israel at that time. 5 She held
court under the Palm of Deborah between Ramah and
Bethel in the hill country of Ephraim, and the Israelites went
up to her to have their disputes decided. 6 She sent for Barak
son of Abinoam from Kedesh in Naphtali and said to him,
“The LORD, the God of Israel, commands you: ‘Go, take with
you ten thousand men of Naphtali and Zebulun and lead
them up to Mount Tabor.
C. LEADERSHIP PLAN
Judges 4:21 21 But Jael, Heber’s wife, picked up a tent peg
and a hammer and went quietly to him while he lay fast
asleep, exhausted. She drove the peg through his temple
into the ground, and he died.

Leadership Episode Five
A. LEADERSHIP PROBLEM-
Judges 10: 6,7 - 6 Again the Israelites did evil in the eyes
of the Lord. They served the Baals and the Ashtoreths,
and the gods of Aram, the gods of Sidon, the gods of
Moab, the gods of the Ammonites and the gods of the
Philistines. And because the Israelites forsook the Lord
and no longer served him, 7 he became angry with them.
He sold them into the hands of the Philistines and the
Ammonites,
B. LEADERSHIP PERSON –
Judges 10:10, 15 - 10 Then the Israelites cried out to the
Lord, “We have sinned against you, forsaking our God
and serving the Baals.” 15 But the Israelites said to the
Lord, “We have sinned. Do with us whatever you think
best, but please rescue us now.
Judges 11:29, 33 29 Then the Spirit of the LORD came on
Jephthah. He crossed Gilead and Manasseh, passed
through Mizpah of Gilead, and from there he advanced
against the Ammonites.
C. LEADERSHIP PLAN
Judges 11:29, 33 29 Then the Spirit of the LORD came on
Jephthah. He crossed Gilead and Manasseh, passed
through Mizpah of Gilead, and from there he advanced
against the Ammonites.
Leadership Episode Six
A. LEADERSHIP PROBLEM-
Judges 13:1 13 Again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of
the Lord, so the Lord delivered them into the hands of the
Philistines for forty years.
B. LEADERSHIP PERSON – Samson
Judges 13:3, 5 3 The angel of the LORD appeared to
Manoah’s wife and said, “Even though you have been
unable to have children, you will soon become pregnant
and give birth to a son.
Judges 13:3, 5 5 You will become pregnant and give birth
to a son, and his hair must never be cut. For he will be
dedicated to God as a Nazirite from birth. He will begin to
rescue Israel from the Philistines.”
Judges 15:20 20 Samson judged Israel for twenty years
during the period when the Philistines dominated the land.
C. LEADERSHIP PLAN
Judges 11:29, 33 29 At that time the Spirit of the Lord
came upon Jephthah, and he went throughout the land of
Gilead and Manasseh, including Mizpah in Gilead, and
from there he led an army against the Ammonites.
Conclude Judges
Ruth- 1 Corinthians 1:26-29 26 Brothers and sisters,
think of what you were when you were called. Not many
of you were wise by human standards; not many were
influential; not many were of noble birth. 27 But God
chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise;
God chose the weak things of the world to shame the
strong. 28 God chose the lowly things of this world and
the despised things—and the things that are not—to
nullify the things that are, 29 so that no one may boast
before him.
Leading with Love: The Book of Ruth
Point 1: She chose to love
Ruth 1: 16, 17 16 But Ruth replied, “Don’t urge me to
leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will
go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be
my people and your God my God. 17 Where you die I will
die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord deal with
me, be it ever so severely, if even death separates you
and me.”
She served with love:
Ruth 2: 2, 3 2 And Ruth the Moabite said to Naomi, “Let
me go to the fields and pick up the leftover grain behind
anyone in whose eyes I find favor.”
Naomi said to her, “Go ahead, my daughter.” 3 So she
went out, entered a field and began to glean behind the
harvesters. As it turned out, she was working in a field
belonging to Boaz, who was from the clan of Elimelek.
She rested in love
Ruth 3: 9, 10 9 “Who are you?” he asked. “I am your
servant Ruth,” she said. “Spread the corner of your
garment over me, since you are a guardian-
redeemer [a] of our family.” 10 “The Lord bless you, my
daughter,” he replied. “This kindness is greater than
that which you showed earlier: You have not run after
the younger men, whether rich or poor.
Part 4 – Her love was rewarded
Ruth 4:13 13 So Boaz took Ruth and she became his
wife. When he made love to her, the Lord enabled her
to conceive, and she gave birth to a son.
--Boaz leadership was met by Ruth leadership
Leadership lead to Type and Shadow:
Point 1: Willing
Leviticus 25: 25 25 “‘If one of your fellow Israelites
becomes poor and sells some of their property, their
nearest relative is to come and redeem what they have
sold.
Galatians 4: 4-5 4 But when the set time had fully
come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under
the law, 5 to redeem those under the law, that we might
receive adoption to sonship. [a]
Point 2: Right
Leviticus 25: 48-49 48 they retain the right of
redemption after they have sold themselves. One of
their relatives may redeem them: 49 An uncle or a cousin
or any blood relative in their clan may redeem them. Or
if they prosper, they may redeem themselves.
Ruth 3:12-13 12 Although it is true that I am a guardian-
redeemer of our family, there is another who is more
closely related than I. 13 Stay here for the night, and in
the morning if he wants to do his duty as your guardian-
redeemer, good; let him redeem you. But if he is not
willing, as surely as the Lord lives I will do it. Lie here
until morning.”
Hebrews 2:11 11 Both the one who makes people
holy and those who are made holy are of the same
family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers
and sisters.
--the connection to us being redeemed
Point 3: Power
Ruth 4:4-6 4 I thought I should bring the matter to your
attention and suggest that you buy it in the presence of
these seated here and in the presence of the elders of
my people. If you will redeem it, do so. But if you [a] will
not, tell me, so I will know. For no one has the right to
do it except you, and I am next in line.” “I will redeem it,”
he said. 5 Then Boaz said, “On the day you buy the land
from Naomi, you also acquire Ruth the
Moabite, the [b] dead man’s widow, in order to maintain
the name of the dead with his property.” 6 At this, the
guardian-redeemer said, “Then I cannot redeem it
because I might endanger my own estate. You redeem
it yourself. I cannot do it.”
