Monthly Memory Verse: James 4:17 If anyone, then, knows
the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.
Pericope: Luke 16:19-24 19 “There was a rich man who was
dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. 20 At
his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with
sores 21 and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s
table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores. 22 “The time came
when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s
side. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 In Hades, where
he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with
Lazarus by his side. 24 So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have
pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water
and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’
Sermon Text: Luke 16:24 24 So he called to him, ‘Father
Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his
finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this
fire.’
Sermon Title: Should’ve, Would’ve, Could’ve Pt 3: The Wake Up
Call.
Point 1: Complacent vs19 19 “There was a rich man who was
dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day.
Here are five quotes from renowned Christian leaders addressing
the issue of complacency:
• 1. **Billy Graham**: "Comfort and prosperity have never
enriched the world as much as adversity has."
• 2. **C.S. Lewis**: "The problem is not that God’s blessings
sometimes make us complacent; it’s that we frequently
become complacent in the face of God’s blessings."
• 3. **Martin Luther King Jr.**: "There is nothing more tragic
than to find an individual bogged down in the length of life,
devoid of breadth."
• 4. **A.W. Tozer**: "Complacency is a deadly foe of all
spiritual growth."
• 5. **John Piper**: "The greatest enemy of hunger for God is
not poison but apple pie... It is not the banquet of the wicked
that dulls our appetite for heaven, but endless nibbling at the
table of the world."
• James Baldwin said not everything that is faced can be
changed but nothing can be changed that is not faced.”
Point 2: Consequences vs 25 25 “But Abraham replied, ‘Son,
remember that in your lifetime you received your good things,
while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here
and you are in agony. The Rich man had to live with the
consequences of his sinful oversight. vs. 26 And besides all this,
between us and you a great chasm has been set in place, so that
those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone
cross over from there to us.’
• Matthew 12:36 NLT 36 And I tell you this, you must give an
account on judgment day for every idle word you speak.
- ESV 36 I tell you, on the day of judgment people will
give account for every careless word they speak,
• Romans 14:12 NLT 12 Yes, each of us will give a personal
account to God.
- ESV 12 So then each of us will give an account of
himself to God.
• 1 Pet 4:5 NLT - 5 But remember that they will have to face
God, who stands ready to judge everyone, both the living
and the dead.
- ESV 5 but they will give account to him who is ready to
judge the living and the dead.
• God don’t play the victim card
• God holds you accountable
Matt 24: 12 And because lawlessness will be increased, the love
of many will grow cold.;
2 Tim 4: 3 For the time is coming when people will not endure
sound[a] teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for
themselves teachers to suit their own passions,
Point 3: Unconvinced vs 28-31 28 for I have five brothers. Let him
warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of
torment.’ 29 “Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the
Prophets; let them listen to them.’ 30 “‘No, father Abraham,’ he said,
‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’
31 “He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets,
they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’”
Matt 24: 12 And because lawlessness will be increased, the love
of many will grow cold.;
2 Tim 4: 3 For the time is coming when people will not endure
sound[a] teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for
